Otoplasty

Otoplasty

What is it?

Ear surgery (otoplasty) is one of the most popular procedures in plastic surgery.

It is performed frequently because it addresses both aesthetic and functional issues related to the shape and position of the ears.

What are the indications for
otoplasty?

Protruding ears (lop ears)
Asymmetry of the auricles
Cartilage defects (congenital or acquired)
Absence of the ear (microtia or anotia)
Dissatisfaction with the appearance of the ears.

The procedure is performed both in adults and children from the age of 5–6 years, when the ear cartilage is sufficiently formed.

The operation usually takes 1–2 hours. The results are long-lasting and remain for life.

What are the techniques of ear surgery?

Correction of protruding ears (traditional otoplasty)

An incision is made at the back of the ear (at the junction of the auricle and the head)

The cartilage tissue is shaped, and excess cartilage or skin is removed

The auricle is fixed closer to the head using sutures.

Reconstructive otoplasty

Used to restore the auricle after injuries or for congenital defects

Grafts from the patient’s own cartilage (such as rib cartilage) or synthetic materials may be used to form the ear.

Incisionless otoplasty

Can be used for correcting mild forms of protruding ears

The cartilage is shaped using special threads without the need for a surgical incision.

When can otoplasty be contraindicated?

Acute infectious diseases (flu, cold)

Chronic diseases in the decompensation stage (diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases)

Blood clotting disorders

Oncological diseases

How is the otoplasty procedure performed?

01 Anesthesia

In adults, the operation is performed under local anesthesia

In children, general anesthesia is usually used.

02 Incisions

Made on the back side of the ear to avoid visible scars

03 Cartilage modeling

The surgeon removes excess cartilage or skin and gives the auricle the desired shape and position.

04 Fixation

Internal sutures are used to secure the shape of the ear.

05 Closing incisions

The incisions are closed with cosmetic sutures, which are removed after 7–10 days, or absorbable threads are used.

How is the recovery and rehabilitation after otoplasty?

01 First days

Wearing a compression bandage to maintain the shape of the ear

Moderate swelling, bruising, discomfort, or pain may occur (controlled by pain relievers).

02 First week

Avoid physical exertion and contact of the ears with water.

03 1–3 weeks

The bandage is worn mainly at night to avoid accidental injuries during sleep.

04 Full recovery

Usually lasts 4–6 weeks

The final result can be evaluated after 1–3 months.

Otoplasty is a relatively simple, safe procedure that significantly improves the appearance of the ears and boosts self-confidence.
